A rather garish map showing the various stages of the development of the area at Tanis.
However the interpretation is not easily done at Tanis - virtually all limestone buildings at the site have been destroyed over the centuries by limestone burners - it is only by the discovery of the foundation deposits that the identity of the original builders come to light:
Psusennes I built the enclosure wall and the central part of the Great Temple,
Osorkon II built the outer part of the Great Temple,
Shoshenq III built the Monumental Gate,
The temple of Khnosu (North Temple on the above map) and buildings to the west of it date to the 22nd Dynasty.
Other buildings at the site date to the 30th Dynasty as well as the Ptolemaic period.
