Osorkon the Elder

(Aakheperre Setepenre)

984 - 978

He is sometimes referred to as Osokhor (the Greek form of his name) to avoid confusion with the Osorkon kings (this is due to the very late discovery of the identity of Osorkon the elder - 1977)

A break in the continuity of the kingship of the 21st Dynasty appears to have happpened after Amenemope's death. Osrokon was the son of the Libyan Chief of the Ma, or Meshwesh, Shoshenq A by the lady Mehetweskhet.

There does not appear to be any violent accession to the throne (even though the Libyans were until a few years previously enemies of the state - foes of Ramesses III and Merneptah)
